The lectures will take place on the Campus Garching (Underground station:
Forschungsgelände Garching).
The main lecture room is HS1 in the Physics Department, as indicated on this map:

Accommodation
Funded participants: For participants who receive financial support we have reserved rooms in the ETAP Hotel Garching Hochbrück
Self-paying participants: We have compiled an (incomplete) list of low budget hostels and dorms. Please note that all of them are in the center of Munich, whereas the school will take place in Garching, which is north of the city of Munich. The campus in Garching is well connected to the city by subway. It is very advisable to book the rooms as soon as possible since it will be hard to find cheap accommodation in Munich in the summer!
from the airport to the city center: take the urban trains S1 or S8 from the airport (final stop). They will both bring you to the city center (e.g. Hauptbahnhof/main station, Marienplatz)
from the airport to hotel ETAP: take the urban trains S1 or S8 from the airport (final stop). Get off at the stop Marienplatz. Take the metro U6 to Garching-Forschungszentrum. Get off at the stop Garching-Hochbrück. The hotel ETAP is next to the metro station.
from anywhere to the Campus Garching: take the metro U6 to Garching-Forschungszentrum and get off at Garching-Forschungszentrum (final stop)
In order to travel from the airport to your hotel we recommend to buy a Airport-City-Day-Ticket (aka Tageskarte-Gesamtnetz) for 10.40 EUR. This is valid for one day (until 6am of the following day) and you can use any means of public transport all over the city. For the duration of the school we recommend to buy weekly tickets, which are valid from Monday to Sunday. The exact name of the ticket is "IsarCard-Woche" valid for ring 1-7, for 25.50 EUR.
If you're staying in Etap and do not plan to visit the city center often, then maybe short trip (Kurzstrecke) tickets are the better choice. They are priced at 1.20 EUR and are valid for two stops with the underground. Another alternative is tickets that are valid for one or more zones (see zone map above).
If you need in addition a single day ticket for the city, we recommend to buy the ticket "Munich XXL" for 7 EUR. If you stay within 4 rings (Innenraum) you can also choose single day-ticket (Single-Tageskarte) for 5.20 EUR
Summarized:
Day of arrival:
Airport-City-Day-Ticket (Single-Tageskarte Gesamtnetz), 10.40 EUR, valid in the whole city including airport (rings 1-16)
Days before the school:
Munich XXL, 7 EUR, valid in the whole city including the Garching Campus (rings 1-8)
or day-ticket, 5.20 EUR, valid in rings 1-4 only
Mon-Sun:
IsarCard-Woche for 7 rings, 25.50 EUR, valid in the whole city including the Garching Campus (rings 1-7)
You can buy these tickets at the ticket machines at the airport and at most underground stations. At major stations you can also buy them from kiosks. We recommend, though, to buy them from the clerk at the information booth in the airport's central area (area Z); this is also where the trains leave for the city. Also, it is advisable to buy the IsarCard-Woche (and possibly the XXL ticket) in advance on the day when you arrive, since not all underground stations in the city are equipped with ticket machines for IsarCards.
There are basically two types of ticket machines, those with touch-screen (right photo) and those without (left photo). You can buy a greater variety of tickets at the touch-screen machines.
At the machines with buttons you can buy day-tickets only and tickets for smaller trips. Weekly tickets are only available at the touch-screen machines or at the kiosks at the airport, main station and various underground stops.
For weekly tickets you can choose the week in which you want to use them. The date is printed on them. Daily tickets are usually issued without date and must be validated before entering the train. Look for these validation machines:
If you decide to buy your IsarCard at a vending machine, you might be puzzled when it asks you for some personal number. This only applies to those who have some sort of abonnement with MVV. Simply don't enter a number.
