Different teachers have different methods to teach Hyongs to their students.
Some prefer to teach a Hyong movement for movement, others like to split
up Hyongs into short sequences. Some prefer to show the Hyong as one
large piece. This is of course the hardest way for the student.
All this methods work more or less.
If you have learned a Hyong, you have to further work on it. There
are several methods besides the normal straight run of a Hyong.
Some ideas:
- Don't use always the same orientation in the room.
Especially a slanted orientation, or even an non rectangular room
makes it more difficult to find the correct direction.
You should be able to practice a Hyong regardless of the orientation in
the room.
- Pick sequences or even single movements out of a Hyong and practice
them, especially difficult ones, or those you have trouble with.
- Try to practice Hyongs in unusual enviroment. E.g.:
- In a forest.
- On sand (at the beach).
- In Water (at the beach).
- On a thick soft mat (like is used by athletes).
- Blindfolded.
Try to have the correct orientation at the end of the Hyong even with
closed eyes. You should have a partner who warns you of collissions.
This can be done in a group too.
- With disturbances. E.g.
- Solve arithmetical lessons during Hyong, a partner could ask you the question (like 3 x 4 = ? ).
- A partner challenges your concentration with grimaces, fints or chokes.
- With changed command rythm.
- e.g. block and countertechnique on one command during first Hyong.
- with attackers.
This is especially difficult for the attackers, as they have to know
the Hyong very well to make the correct attacks.
- In Slow Motion.
- Mirrored.
- Synchronously with a partner (or more) facing you.
- In Meditation.
You could try to run a Hyong in your thought. Its more difficult than you think!
